Alfred Henry Lewis was a former prosecuting attorney in Cleveland who went west, traveling through New Mexico, Arizona, and Western Texas, where he met the characters who would later write about. He became a newspaper editor for Mora County Pioneer in New Mexico. He moved to Kansas City to practice law again, and found a knack for telling western stories. Encouraged to write them down, he wrote a story called "The Cattleman" for the Kansas City Times, which became the inspiration for his Wolfville series. In 1893, Lewis met Col. Roosevelt, a Civil Service Commisioner, who encouraged him to gather his stories together and publish them in book form.
